The City of Atlanta is requiring it’s employees to return to the office starting April 10, 2025.

All city employees will be required to work in the office, except for employees of the Atlanta 311 Department. Some city employees will move to a hybrid schedule and must be in the office at least three days a week.

City workers were informed of the new RTO policy in a memo by Atlanta Interim Commissioner of Human Resources Calvin Blackburn III. This will be the first time since 2020 that Atlanta is requiring the majority of its city workforce to be in the office.

City Councilman Michael Julian Bond said, “This is really kind of addressing a return to normalcy. Just like in the private sector, the city makes a substantial investment in the buildings that we maintain. There is a cost to that. When people return to the facility, there is an economic impact on the surrounding community — whether they’re buying gas, lunch, groceries, what have you. The mayor is always present, and so he’s leading by example. I know it’s great to work in your pajamas, because the City Council did it for almost two years, but you’ve got the call to serve the public — and this is the best way to serve them.”

Atlanta’s RTO push comes as major companies, and governments, are ordering employees back to the office. Notably, the federal government, as wells as California, Texas, and Minnesota, have all recently instituted some form of RTO mandate. However, New York City recently extended its remote work program for city employees.
