BNY issued a notice to employees telling them to be in the office four days a week starting in September. Currently, BNY employees are required to be in the office at least three days a week.

They did note that a full five day per week RTO mandate was not being planned. The bank has over 50,000 employees, and the three day a week in-office requirement began in 2023.

BNY leadership wrote:

“We believe that it is important that all of us spend more time together working, leading and learning from each other. We’re committed to maintaining personal flexibility, and will continue to support remote work one day a week. We have no plans to return to 5 days in office unless circumstances were to demand otherwise.

Occasional remote work can be effective, but in person we can respond more quickly to dynamic, fast-paced financial markets and better serve our clients. Most managers are already in the office 4 days a week, and we have seen the positive momentum this creates.”

Many large Wall Street banks have pushed back against remote work. Most notably JPM CEO Jamie Dimon. However, Citigroup announced earlier this year that it had no plans to change its hybrid remote work policy.
