Elon Musk Warns Federal Workers: Return to Office or Face Consequences

Tech billionaire Elon Musk, currently spearheading President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), took to X early Monday morning to issue an ultimatum to federal employees. Musk warned that government workers who have not yet returned to their offices full-time will be placed on administrative leave starting this week.

“Those who ignored President Trump’s executive order to return to work have now received over a month’s warning,” Musk wrote, referencing an Executive Order issued by Trump last month mandating an end to remote work for federal employees. “Starting this week, those who still fail to return to office will be placed on administrative leave.” The statement came in response to a claim that many government agency offices in Washington, D.C., remain significantly underoccupied.

Musk’s post follows a weekend of controversy sparked by a mass email from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), sent Saturday, which demanded that federal workers submit five bullet points detailing their accomplishments from the previous week by Monday midnight. Musk had previously suggested that failure to respond would be treated as a resignation, though he later hinted the email might have been a test of responsiveness. The move drew sharp criticism from unions and some federal agencies, with several instructing employees to ignore the request due to legal and logistical concerns.

The Trump administration has championed Musk’s efforts to streamline government operations, with the president praising his efficiency drive over the weekend. However, Musk’s latest threat has reignited debates over his influence and authority within the administration, as well as the feasibility of enforcing such drastic measures across a workforce of over 2 million. As the deadline looms, federal employees brace for potential repercussions, while critics question the practicality and fairness of the policy.
