Nepal Planning Digital Nomad Visa Program

The government of Nepal is currently planning to create a Digital Nomad Visa program within the year.
According to the Kathmandu Post, the plan is outlined in the Economic Reform Implementing Work Plan 2025. Once launched, digital nomads can apply for a “one-time five-year multiple-entry digital nomad visa.”
Eligibility
To be eligible for the visa, a remote worker needs a minimum monthly income $1,500, or a $20,000 bank balance. They also need to have a $100,000 health insurance policy that is valid at Nepali hospitals.
Digital nomads would also be granted residency for at least one year. Additionally, they would be able to open bank accounts in Nepal. If the bank account exceeds $50,000, “any additional amount may be transferred to foreign banks at any time.”
Once the five year period is over, the entire amount can be transferred if the visa is not renewed.
If a digital nomad spends more than 186 days a year in the country, they will be required to pay a 5% income tax.
The proposed policy would also allow digital nomads to purchase a vehicle and use their foreign driver’s license.
Investment
The government hopes to entice the private sector to invest in infrastructure, such as internet connectivity and co-working spaces, to cater to remote workers. These projects will be managed by the Nepal Tourism Board and the Nepal Telecommunications Authority.
The Nepal Tourism Board hopes to attract wealthy workers and encourage longer stays by tourists.
Many hope that the planned digital nomad visa will lead to broader investments, as well as economic benefits.
