In a recent op-ed, a former Google exec and the current CEO of GrowthLoop offered his opinion on remote work.
Chris O’Neill, who formerly led Google Canada, said he was conflicted when he first became the CEO of GrowthLoop which was a remote-first company. However, he found real benefits he “hadn’t previously experienced.”
One benefit is access to global talent pool. O’Neill says “We’ve hired incredible people who we never would have reached if we were tethered to a single location.”
Additionally, O’Neill says that remote work has created a results-oriented culture. Instead of counting the number of hours spent in an office, his company is able to focus on which goals and outcomes have been achieved. Utilizing modern tools and tech, combined with occasional gatherings, keeps everyone “engaged and connected.”
“Remote work isn’t just a compromise—it’s a catalyst for new ways of thinking and working.”
– GrowthLoop CEO Chris O’Neill
O’Neill also says that being intentional and communicating proactively are essential for leading a remote team.
Tips for Remote Leaders
O’Neill finished his article with four tips for leaders of remote teams:
- Be clear with your expectations
- Embrace Technology to facilitate effective communication
- Equip Your Team with the skills (self-motivation, time management, communication) to succeed
- Lead By Example
Honestly, these tips are important for any leader, remote or in-person, to follow.
O’Neill admits there can be challenges to remote work, but there are many benefits too. Flexibility and productivity are both positive side effects of embracing a remote-first approach. Simultaneously, there are many solutions to most remote work issues. He states that remote work may not be for everyone, but each leader should seek to find what works best for their company.
O’Neill believes “the future of work is still unfolding. It’s up to leaders to shape it with clarity, intention, and an open mind.”
